Autumn Services

Overview

As autumn descends upon us, it is a timely reminder that nature is beginning to slow down in readiness for the winter ahead; however, during this seasonal transition many trees, shrubs and plants are at their glorious best.  Maples are showing off their radiant leaves before they finally depart from their host, Dahlias are still providing a colourful spectacle before the frosts take their casualties and plants such as the Cotoneaster gives great pleasure; not only in its abundance of deep red berries but also in its structural form - so important within a border.

Lawn care

It is important to replenish your lawn after the heavy traffic over recent months.  Top dressing, the application of an autumn fertilizer, scarification and aeration are some jobs that can be done now. It will greatly help reduce the risk of disease whilst giving the lawn every opportunity to display a beautiful carpet of green throughout the summer.

Hedge trimming

This is the time of year to give your hedges one final trim before the onset of winter.  Whilst many plant species will respond to cutting by hedge trimmers, Suburban Oasis would recommend trimming hedges with large shiny leaves, such as Laurel, with secateurs; therefore, avoiding damaging the leaves and causing unsightly browning.

Autumn Borders

Border Management

Autumn is an ideal time to bed-in new plants.  Borders will benefit from a liberal addition of organic matter, which improves the drainage and water holding capacity, and a general tidy up before the onset of winter.  Spring flowering bulbs such as Daffodils can now be planted, although Tulips should wait until November.
