Spring Services

Overview

Spring certainly injects an unapologetic ray of colour in our gardens and provides us with a feast of fresh vitality. Daffodils still prove popular and evoke, for many of us, a lasting image of spring and Tulips are beginning to see a revival and offer scrumptious colours and delightful shapes, which must appeal even to the strongest sceptic. Not only can we appreciate the added colours in our borders but spring encourages us to bring out our tubs and pots in all their glory. The masters of this art must be Fergus Garrett and his dedicated team at Great Dixter, who continually provide displays of colour, form and texture; not only in spring but right the way through to ‘doors closing’ at the end of October. If you haven’t been there - be ready for a treat!

Lawn care

Lawns will now need a regular cut and will definitely require a weekly cut as we move in to May; in milder areas this could be earlier. Spring is the ideal time to apply a fertilizer to ensure a healthy and disease free lawn for the remainder of the growing season and if necessary, weed and moss killers could also be applied.

Hedge trimming

As spring takes hold, many hedges will now require their first cut of the season followed by regular trimming depending on the type of hedge.  Hedges will benefit from a good clearing out along the bottom and all weeds and rubbish removed.  This should be followed by a sprinkling of some general purpose fertilizer and a generous application of manure.

Spring Borders

Border Management

Borders will now require regular attention and an annual spring clean will be much needed. The addition of a generous layer of organic matter, slightly forked-in around your beds and borders, will add much needed structure to the soil. The application of a fertilizer will also be of benefit, although this should wait until signs of growth are visible.  The pruning of certain shrubs, for example Buddleia and Lavatera and ornamental Elders, should now be undertaken and perennials divided if they have outgrown their current position.
