Overview
As we move into the summer months, we witness a tapestry of colours; from the pinks, blues and whites, to the explosive vibrancy of the yellows, reds, and oranges. Plants that provide early seasonal colour like Roses, Lilies and Agapanthus give way to the exotic displays of Dahlias, Cannas and other warm climate plants – we are spoilt for choice. The main thing is to sit back, absorb and enjoy the beauty.

Lawn care
Lawns will need a weekly cut and edges kept well trimmed. A liquid feed could be applied to give your lawn an extra boost; however, this should be avoided in periods of drought. If a management programme has already been implemented by Suburban Oasis, you should be able to sit back and admire your lawn in its full glory.

Hedge trimming
Certain hedges, such as Lonicera and Privet will require periodic trimming, although plants such as Hornbeam and Beech, will invariably require a trim in midsummer.

Border Management
Throughout the summer season, gaps will appear once early flowering plants have finished their display. Cannas, Dahlias and other exotic plants can replace the earlier flowers once all risks of frost have passed – probably at the beginning of June. Staking will be needed on those plants that require support, such as delphiniums and verbascums, and a general purpose feed will be of benefit to established shrubs, perennials and newly planted annuals. Other jobs would include dead heading and cutting back certain plants, such as Geraniums, to encourage a second display of blooms - otherwise known as the ‘Chelsea chop’. Weeding is also a necessary evil. |
