Winter Services

Overview

As winter begins to take hold, architectural form and scent play a big part in the garden.  Sarcococca, (Christmas box), Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’ (commonly known as witch hazel), Viburnums and Daphne, all add their colours to the season and provide the cooler air with an unforgettable scent. Ornamental grasses too, such as Calamagrostis, provide a luminous presence particularly when frost has tinged its outline.  Summer may well be a long distant memory, but as we move in to February we have our first signs of the snowdrops that remind us that spring is just around the corner; waiting to make its colourful, vibrant display.

Lawn care

During the winter months the best advice would be to keep off your lawn whenever possible.  In periods of mild weather the grass may well require a slight cut, although the blades should be set high.  It is also important to remove leaves from the grass as they restrict light and air circulation.

Hedge trimming

The winter period, depending on the conditions, is an ideal time to plant bare-rooted plants whilst in their period of dormancy and cut back overgrown deciduous hedges.  When planting a new hedge, Suburban Oasis will ensure the ground is thoroughly prepared; ensuring each plant has the essential ingredients for successful growth. Suburban Oasis will also advise you regarding which plants would be best suited for both the location and the clients’ needs.

Border Management

Whether you have a well tendered garden or have just moved house and inherited an overgrown wilderness, mid winter (January) is an ideal time to cut back many shrubs, deciduous hedges, climbers and perennials.  It is also an ideal time to plan and prepare new beds and borders; therefore, allowing the soil plenty of time to settle before planting can begin sometime during March or April.
