This is one of the busiest periods for the gardener, so get outdoors and enjoy your garden; feeling the warming sun and the increased bird song, Spring is a truly pleasant and peaceful time of year.

March

  • Complete pruning of gooseberries.
  • Cover blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines with fleece to protect from frost.
  • Feed fruit with potassium sulphate at 15g per sq m.
  • Early spring is an ideal time to divide herbaceous plants.
  • Complete cutting back deciduous ornamental grasses and other perennials.
  • Plant warm season grasses such Pennisetum and Miscanthus.
  • Apply a general purpose fertilizer and mulch beds and borders.
  • Start to mow lawns, checking the blades are set high.
  • Apply a moss killer to the lawn and lightly scarify 2 weeks later.
  • Mend lawn edges and repair any bare patches.

April

  • Order your ‘snowdrops in the green’ and plant them as soon as is possible.
  • Use fleece to protect early outdoor sowings.
  • Don’t sow seeds for tender plants such as Ipomoea -wait until May.
  • Remove faded daffodil flowers.
  • Apply a thick layer of organic mulch to rose and shrub beds.
  • Complete the moving and planting of evergreen trees and shrubs.
  • Divide herbaceous plants.
  • Plant summer flowering bulbs.
  • Continue to mow lawns and don’t lower the blades too quickly.
  • Apply a 5 month longevity feed to your lawn.

May

  • Don’t forget to cover peaches, apricots and nectarines with fleece on cold nights.
  • Cut back some older stems on figs to encourage new growth.
  • Continue successional sowings of salad crops and herbs.
  • Watch out for red lily beetle on Lilium and Fritillaria plants,
  • Divide polyanthus and primroses.
  • Lift and divide crowded clumps of daffodils.
  • Start liquid feeding container plants.
  • Remove faded spring bedding like wallflowers and remove spent tulip flowers.
  • Clip evergreen hedges.
  • Prune overgrown Clematis montana after flowering.
