The nights are now longer, so why not take the time to sit down with some garden magazines and books and look for inspirational ways of creating an oasis of beauty for next year.

December

  • Enjoy Christmas with family and friends. Cheers!

January

  • Prune apple and pear trees.
  • Plan a rotation crop for vegetables.
  • Cut back ornamental grasses.
  • Weed beds and borders ready for an early spring mulch.
  • Plant Lily bulbs.
  • Take root cuttings of Phlox, Papaver, Verbascum and Acanthus.
  • Take hardwood cuttings of Cornus, Salix, Weigela and other suitable shrubs.
  • Plant bare-root hedging and roses.
  • Check trees ties.
  • Water house plants sparingly in winter, especially cacti.

February

  • Continue to prune apple and pear trees.
  • Prune autumn raspberries. Cut all the canes down to the ground.
  • Chit seed potato tubers in a light, cool but frost free space.
  • If you’ve not done so already, don’t forget to get your lawn mower in for a service.
  • Order your flower show tickets before certain days get booked up.
  • Continue to deadhead winter pansies and other winter bedding.
  • Sow Sweet peas and place in a cold frame.
  • Prune Wisteria by cutting back the side shoots to two or three buds.
  • Cut back late summer and autumn flowering Clematis to the lowest pair of strong buds.
  • Lay turf if the soil is not too wet and work from planks to avoid compaction.
